                                   Julie Askew, PhD LMFT

Picture
Hello, I’m Julie Askew, also known as Dr. Jules. I started out as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist in London and Brighton back in the early 1990s, specializing in working with clients with anxiety disorders, and eventually my work took me to America where I completed my PhD and then spent ten years as a professor, training and doing clinical supervision with Master's level therapists at Hofstra University in New York. Along the way I have been a Bereavement Counsellor for CRUSE and a Counsellor in the NHS and mental health clinics in the U.K.          I completed two years of clinical training at the Maudsley Hospital in London towards my masters degree, working with relationship and sexual issues and more recently have become a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist. I have been a sex educator, a sex therapist, a parent educator, a teacher and lecturer, a tenured professor, and a researcher. I have been invited to present at international conferences and have published on subjects such as Couples and Viagra, Parenting Practices, Sexual Risk Taking in Young People, and have a book in process entitled Hysterectomy & Sex: What Women and Their Partners Need to Know. I have written and taught classes on Family Lifecycles, Couples and Family Therapies, Sexual Health, Parenting, and Child Development amongst others. My Master’s degree is in Psychotherapy and my Ph.D. is in Child and Family Development with Marriage and Family Therapy specialization. I am a mother of two children, and a transplant from England to frenetic New York to France who also lived in Asia in her teens (so I understand cross-cultural and immigration issues!). I now maintain a private therapy practice in Europe where clients can consult with me via video link.

My Approach to Therapy

Clients often ask me how I work. This question can be somewhat of a challenge to answer, due to the fact that my therapeutic approach with each client is integrative and varied, depending on their issues and needs. I draw from a pool of theoretical positions covered throughout my training including Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), NLP, Structural Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, the Gottman Method, Experiential theories such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, and neuroscience. My goal throughout is to provide a safe, confidential and supportive space where clients are helped to define and achieve their aims. My core belief is that clients have an innate ability to gain insight, grow and change their life’s course, even though they may often feel they are stuck in repeating patterns and losing hope. I see therapy as an active process where the client/s and I form a collaborative relationship that moves them to where they need to be.

Therapy can be active and direct, requiring homework and intention, when the treatment calls for it. It can also be a quiet and reflective space, providing solace and healing from the stresses of everyday life. At all times therapy is a collaboration, a partnership towards helping you to move forward.
